Vascular Lesions

What are Vascular Lesions?

Vascular lesions are relatively common abnormalities of the skin that affect men and the majority of women. Spider veins, also known as telangiectasia, and diffuse redness are common side effects of aging, UV damage, and pregnancy, but they can also be inherited.

A variety of disorders can cause vascular lesions. Common types of vascular lesions include enlarged leg veins, face veins, angiomas, and venous lakes.

Laser and light-based devices have emerged as a viable therapy option for removing and diminishing unwanted vascular issues in a safe and effective manner.

Dilated Veins / Spider Veins

Facial and spider veins are dilated capillary vessels that are visible to the naked eye. Couperose occurs when dilated veins are concentrated in the face as blood builds up in capillary tubes. Left untreated, these blood vessels will remain dilated.

Enlarged, twisted varicose veins is a common skin disorder. The widened blood vessels appear as threadlike red lines or patterns that are visible just beneath the skin surface. They grow gradually and are often seen in clusters. Spider veins are generally seen on areas of the face frequently exposed to sunlight, such as the nose and cheeks.

Causes of Spider Veins

Individuals are more likely to develop spider veins if they:

  • work or play outside
  • are older, as blood vessels weaken and spider veins form as skin ages
  • use abrasive soaps and sponges on their skin
  • use corticosteroids and some skin products, which thin and weaken the skin
  • consume large amounts of alcohol, which increases the flow of blood in vessels

IPL Photofacial

IPL Intense Pulsed Light uses light based technology to help treat the appearance of sun damaged skin, fade dark spots, freckles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, reduce large pores and diffuse redness caused by broken capillaries or Rosacea.

It works by delivering Intense Pulsed Light technology below the skin’s surface, light is absorbed by the melanin responsible for brown ‘age spots’ or ‘sun spots’ and also the blood vessels that are responsible for broken capillaries. The body’s natural processes then remove the injured tissue, improving the overall look and tone of the skin, while boosting skin firmness and elasticity, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

IPL is perfect for those patients who are ready to reverse years of sun damage, but are not yet in need of a more invasive procedure.
